SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Big crowds came back this weekend to the Phoenix Open after a couple frosty days that put the tournament behind schedule.
The third-round resumed Sunday morning after a 31-minute frost delay, according to The Associated Press.
“People say this happens every 25 years," said tournament chairman Mike McQuaid. “But I think it’s more like 100 years, and it happen to fall on 2011.”
This year Mother Nature took a toll on the tournament with frost warnings and player delays all week. Play will have to go into Monday to fit it all in.
But to many of the 100,000 plus fans in attendance this weekend, the tournament is about more than golf; it’s about fun.
“I don’t even understand golf,” said a woman waiting for golfers to pass by.
The line to the always hopping hole 16 was long and lasted an hour if you were in the back.
But for Dave Deluz, it’s all about golf. “I live in Sedona, and I come here every year.”
On Saturday and Sunday, the sun and warmer temperatures are back and so are the fans, which is how the Phoenix Open should look.
