SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Congressman Ben Quayle is denying accusations that he was involved in an incident that included drinking and nudity in an area considered by many to be holy land.
POLITICO reported Sunday night about an FBI investigation into the fact finding trip which involved 30 freshmen Republican congressmen.
POLITICO reports that Quayle, as well as several of his colleagues, went out drinking one night and then went swimming in the Sea of Galilee.
According to POLITICO, one of Quayle's colleagues, Rep. Kevin Yoder from Kansas, admitted to swimming naked.
Yoder on Monday apologized to his constituents for the "embarrassing situation".
Congressman David Schweikert was also on that trip to Israel but tells ABC15 he and his wife retired to their hotel room before the drinking and swimming got underway as POLITICO claims.
Schweikert, who is now Quayle's opponent in Arizona's sixth district, calls Quayle's alleged behavior disappointing.
"This has become a pattern now with Ben Quayle," said Schweikert. "Let's face it, we can do better."
The following is Tiffany Quayle's full statement:
Ben and I and our daughter Evie were there together that evening in the Holy Land, although I was eight and a half months pregnant with her. We were neither party nor witness to any of the inappropriate behavior described in the article, nor were we a part of, or aware of any inquiry. We did return to Arizona with some water from the Sea of Galilee to baptize Evie after she was born.
