SCOTTDALE, AZ - A man is facing animal cruelty charges after more than 25 animals were found uncared for at his Scottsdale home Monday.
Scottsdale police spokesman Officer Dave Pubins said the Arizona Humane Society called officers to check on the welfare of the animals living at the home near Pima and Jackrabbit Roads.
Humane Society officials had information that the homeowner was in the hospital having a medical procedure done and wasn't caring for his animals.
Pubins said when officers arrived; they found more than a dozen turtles in the backyard, five of them dead. One dog and twelve birds were also found inside the home.
Officers smelled smoke coming from inside the house and called the fire department. Firefighters traced the smoke to a smoldering cleaning item next to a faulty microwave oven.
Pubins said fire crews speculated that a fire would have likely taken place later in the day had they not intervened.
Authorities asked the Humane Society to take the animals while their owner is in the hospital. Pubins said when he is released, he can go through the process of getting his pets back.
The homeowner is facing multiple counts of animal cruelty.
Police have not released his identity at this time.
