SCOTTSDALE, AZ - A 91-year -old Scottsdale man admits he is lucky to be alive after being attacked by a swarm of Africanized bees Monday.
He was stung at least 49 times and spent the night in the hospital. Tuesday, he is back home and doing fine.
"It was an energetic and vicious attack," said Evar who asked us not to use his last name.
The former ASU math professor said he was taking the recycling bin to the curb when he was attacked.
He tried to out run the bees, but they followed so he jumped into his car while the bees continued to attack.
A day later, several dead bees are still in the car, one of them stuck to the inside of the car door.
"I ran one way then the other and finally got into the car for safety," Evar said.
The beehive was found inside a wooden balcony that had partially collapsed earlier this week disturbing the hive.
Fire crews used foam on the bees and a bee expert removed the hive. They found 100 pounds of honey in the hive.
