PARADISE VALLEY, AZ - A Valley crash that made witnesses cringe has left residents of a small Illinois town saddened after an 11-year-old girl was killed and her mother and brother hospitalized.
"We came to the intersection and saw mangled cars everywhere," said one witness. "I saw the black car spin and bodies flying out," said another.
The four-car wreck happened around 9:30 a.m. Saturday near Paradise Valley Mall.
Police said 46-year-old Barry T. Jordan, the apparent driver of a speeding truck, ran a red light in front of the mall and hit three vehicles. The careening truck hit a Honda sedan, a pickup and Mini Cooper in the intersection, according to police.
Inside one of the vehicles was 11-year-old Destiney Kimble, who was killed in the crash. Kimble's 15-year-old brother, Riley Beckwith, was also in the car and is currently in a coma at a Valley hospital.
Their mother, 37-year-old Melia Skinner is reportedly awake, but remains in critical condition.
The family had just moved to Phoenix from Illinois in search of a better life and to be closer to other members of the family.
"They were a very nice family," said Austin Allen, a family friend from Illinois. "Bad things happen to good people I guess."
A candlelight vigil is reportedly being held at a high school in Monmouth, Ill., the city where the family is from.
Police tell ABC15 Jordan was taken into custody after being released from the hospital.
