CAVE CREEK, AZ - Chris and Paty Williams can still feel the pit in their stomach after they showed up to their charity business on July 4th and discovered they had been hit by thieves.
"It's just a sickening feeling to pull up and notice your stuff is gone," said Chris Williams, co-owner of For Goodness Sakes.
For Goodness Sakes is a thrift store that donates 100 percent of its proceeds to animal rescue groups.
Chris said they had a big sale on Saturday, July 3rd. Afterwards, volunteers helped load up two trailers with goods to take back to the garage where they store excess merchandise.
Friends told the couple the 5x8 cargo trailer and car trailer were both there when they passed by the business around 1 a.m., but were gone when they drove past again around 7 a.m.
One of the trailers, a white 1998 Big Tex Ch70 car hauler, was borrowed from a friend and was valued at over $2,500.
The other trailer was a 1993 homemade black trailer with white plywood sides and bottom, which Chris says will cost $800 to replace.
"Obviously, beyond having a trailer I have to replace for a friend, when these theives stole these trailers, they stole from the animals, they stole from the groups we support, they stole from our cause."
Chris said he and his wife Paty were driving on Carefree Highway when they spotted many of the stolen goods strewn along the side of the road. The couple believe the items may have flown out when the thieves were making their getaway.
They believed the thieves turned on 50th Street.
"I guess tears tell it all, it was just devastating. We've had our heart and soul into this business, this is my passion and I just couldn't believe that somebody did that," said Paty.
The couple now have a donation jar on their retail counter to help replace the two trailers.
