WICKENBURG, AZ - Police in Wickenburg are investigating a homicide after the manager of an apartment complex was found dead Tuesday morning.
According to Wickenburg police, officers responded to a call of a deceased person at the Coronado Glen Apartments on Vulture Mine Road just before 9 a.m.
"My neighbor came over and said, 'It's Betty she's been shot,'" said friend Debby James.
Officers found 63-year-old Elizabeth A. Walker deceased and police say the incident is being investigated as a homicide.
"Why would they go in and do that? She had no money on her, the rent is paid with checks or money orders," said Rebecca Lozano, another of Walker's friends.
Police tell ABC15 they don't think anything is missing from the leasing office, so now comes the theory the attack may have been personal.
"Here's a lady doing her job and somebody was upset because she was doing it and maybe wanted to hurt her," said Interim Police Chief Owen Black.
Police said the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Public Safety are assisting in the investigation by providing personnel, technical assistance and resources.
The cause of death will be determined by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner, police said.
The investigation is ongoing as Wickenburg police continue to follow up on leads in the case and work to find a motive in the homicide.
"I still can't believe it. Who would want to hurt her? She was there for everyone," said James.
