TUCSON, AZ - One survivor says her husband is a true hero… and she's here today to prove it.

Seventy-six-year-old Dorwan Stoddard was one of the six killed in Tucson. His wife says he sacrificed his own life to save hers.

Mavy Stoddard is recovering from gunshot wounds and profound psychic wounds. But get her talking about her husband, Dorwan, and she'll tell you a good story. And even make you laugh.

"He was in my class in sixth grade, and he was my boyfriend," Mavy said. "I was the first girl he ever kissed. He had to improve for 50 years in order to get me," she said, laughing.

What she means by that is, Dorwan -- or Dory, as she calls him -- moved away when she was 13. They both got married to other people.

Dory had four sons, Mavy had four daughters, three of whom surrounded her during the interview.

And then, both of their spouses died at about the same time, and so after 50 years, Mavy and Dory reconnected.

I wouldn't kiss him, because I didn't want to get married, and I knew he wanted a wife," Mavy said. "Finally one day, he put a TV cabinet together for me, and I felt I owed him a real kiss.

Within months, they were married. For fifteen years, they put 92,000 miles on their RV, traveling all over the country.

"He put me in fairy land, and made me the princess," Mavy said.

On Saturday, while seeing Congresswoman Giffords at her Safeway event, they got caught in the crosshairs.

Both decided to get on the ground.

That's when, according to Mavy, her husband became a hero.

"He fell on top of me to save my life, because that's who he was."
