TUCSON, AZ - The Arizona State Prison complex in Tucson was locked down after a fight broke out in the Santa Rita Unit Thursday evening.
Bill Lamoreaux of the Arizona Department of Corrections said in a news release that the fight began around 5:30 p.m., and involved approximately 200 Hispanic and African-American inmates.
The yard was secured without force by Tactical Unit Support teams, and control of the unit was restored around 6 p.m.
Lamoreaux said in a Friday news release that two officers were taken to the hospital where they were treated and released.
In addition, 11 inmates were also taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the disturbance. Five were treated and released while six remain in the hospital in stable condition.
All of the complex staff was accounted for, and the Santa Rita unit is to remain on lockdown for several days while the investigation continues.
Lamoreaux said there would be no visitation at the unit this weekend and that other units at the complex are slowly returning to normal activities.
