TUCSON, Ariz. - Safeway Inc. has built a memorial at its Tucson supermarket where six people were shot to death and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 12 others wounded.

The company announced Saturday that it had completed the memorial near the spot where the shooting happened. Sunday marks the one-year anniversary of the shooting.

Safeway Phoenix division president Dan Valenzuela issued a statement saying the company wants to make sure the shooting site remains respected.

Spokeswoman Nancy Keane says no formal ceremony was held.

The memorial was built in a landscaped area next to the store entrance. It consists of a large granite boulder circled by six smaller granite boulders. The circle of rocks represents the six lives lost, and the larger boulder represents the wounded and "Tucson's unbreakable spirit."
