TUCSON, AZ - A Pima County Sheriff's Department drug dog has been euthanized after suffering a bizarre injury.
Kilo, a Belgian Malinois, was put down this week following a paralyzing spinal cord injury while chasing a toy in the backyard of his handler.
Deputy Jesus Banuelos says the dog was diagnosed with trauma to his spinal cord from a broken piece of spinal disk.
Banuelos says veterinarians treated Kilo but were unable to restore movements to his legs.
Officials say since February 2011, Deputy Gerald Ahern and Kilo have conducted 263 narcotics searches
The deputy and his dog were described by Banuelos as "one of the most productive narcotics teams in the history of the Pima County Sheriff's Department Canine Unit."
