QUARTZSITE, AZ - The town of Quartzsite is looking for a new police chief after firing theirs.

According to a press release , Jeff Gilbert was fired Tuesday for gross negligence and willful misconduct.

Gilbert, who is believed to be in Alabama, was notified by certified mail.

In 2011, DPS launched a criminal investigation into allegations Gilbert had workers run criminal background checks on people he didn't like. Quartzsite Mayor Ed Foster accused Gilbert of repeatedly abusing his authority by using it to harass and arrest political foes.

The press release did not say if the DPS investigation is related to Gilbert's dismissal.
