MARANA, AZ - A plane that had circled back to a southern Arizona airport just after takeoff crashed after missing the runway, causing serious injuries to the two people onboard Saturday, authorities said.
One of the injured was a 16-year-old girl who was taking an introductory flight for possible flying lessons, Capt. Adam Goldberg of the Northwest Fire/Rescue District said. The girl's mother witnessed the crash at Marana Northwest Regional Airport.
The 46-year-old flight instructor who was flying the single-engine Remos airplane suffered life-threatening injuries, Goldberg said.
Goldberg said witnesses saw the plane take off, take a hard right, circle around, miss the runway and land in a field next to the runway. A medical helicopter crew based at the airport witnessed the crash and began helping the instructor and girl immediately.
Federal Aviation Administration Kathleen Bergen said the federal agency was investigating the crash.
National Transportation Safety Transportation Board officials were expected to arrive at the airport Saturday afternoon to begin an investigation.
