AGUILA, AZ - Maricopa County sheriff's deputies have arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with the shooting death of a woman in a rural community northwest of Phoenix.
Jose Zarate is facing charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault and prohibited weapon possession. He was arrested at his home in Aguila on Wednesday and booked into the county jail.
The sheriff's office says Zarate is not a U.S. citizen and has been living in the country illegally.
Investigators say Zarate went to Maria Saucedo's home on Monday night. He was allegedly expressing interest in pursuing a romantic relationship with the woman's 13-year-old daughter.
When Saucedo refused his request, investigators say he allegedly pulled out a rifle and shot the 31-year-old mother in the chest at close range while her daughter was in the room.
