Candy wrappers help police track down AZ man accused of breaking in to bakery

ELOY, AZ - After kicking in the front window to a party supply store in Eloy, police said a man stole a safe with cash and jewelry inside.

On his way out, he also grabbed handfuls of candy.

"The detectives asked me what do you notice that's missing besides your safe and he's like anything over here and usually we have this all stocked, all the candies, and we had a box of variety chocolates and all the chocolates were gone, completely," said Jennifer Jimenez, the daughter of the store's owner.

Jimenez came to work last week and noticed the front window smashed in.

During their investigation, Eloy police matched a shoe print found on a piece of glass with one found on the ground.

While following the footprints, police found an unexpected string of clues.

"When the detective followed the trail to the back he found a bunch of the candy wrappers. They were all open. They still looked new like they were just dropped over there," said Jimenez

Officers followed the trail of empty candy wrappers which led them right to the suspect's nearby home where police arrested Jose Lopez, Jr.

"The fact the suspect was so dumb to leave candy wrappers that was just funny to me. Like, how do you not know you're dropping candies and just leaving a trail behind," joked Jimenez.
