Border Patrol agents find 2,200 pounds of marijuana abandoned in AZ desert

AJO, AZ - Border Patrol agents seized more than 2,200 pounds of marijuana in two separate finds in Ajo, Arizona over the weekend.

Agents assigned to Ajo's All-Terrain Vehicle Unit reportedly found tire tracks that drove off road into the desert off State Route 85.

The tracks led the agents to an SUV in the west desert, which was found to have 64 bundles, more than 1,400 pounds, of marijuana onboard.

Agents later discovered 12 bundles, an additional 800 pounds, of the substance which had been apparently abandoned in the desert west of Lukeville.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection estimated that the 76 bundles of marijuana recovered by the agents are worth more than $1.7 million.

The marijuana and the vehicle containing the drug were seized and transported by border agents for further processing.
