The sound of skateboards is sweeping the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in central Arizona.
And one of those skateboarders has a special connection to the man creating the boards he rides.
Douglas Miles Jr. is usually out five days a week practicing, perfecting his moves.
The skateboarding may be hot, but thanks to his dad the boards are even hotter.
“I’m a painter, I’m an artist, I design skateboards, I started the first Native American skateboard company called Apache Skateboards,” Douglas Miles says.
Miles has been an artist for about 15 years and designing skateboards for about three years.
He got into the business after his son one day said he needed a skateboard.
Douglas has turned his art into a business that is booming.
He mixes traditional style with contemporary to design his boards. One board even features an image of Marlon Brando as Don Corleone in “The Godfather.”
“For me to have my art and watch a kid ride it and use it and have fun with it and become one with it … it’s a big kick and an honor for me,” Miles says.
If they scuff it up or break it, that’s OK, according to Miles. He says he’d rather have the kids using his artwork skating than “doing something out there illegal.”
