SACATON, AZ - A van carrying Arizona Department of Corrections officers rolled over after the driver lost control when a tire blew out on Interstate 10 south of Phoenix.
The accident forced closures and restrictions of lanes in both directions of the freeway near the Gila River bridge for parts of Friday morning.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said the van was carrying nine officers to the Phoenix area from a prison complex in Florence where the officers had worked overnight.
The van rolled a number of times and came to rest in the median, Graves said.
Three of the workers received injuries serious enough to be air-lifted to Valley hospitals while the other six were transported by ground ambulance to local hospitals for treatment.
Graves said the most serious injury was one officer's broken leg.
