BENSON, AZ - A 9-year-old boy was airlifted to the hospital Sunday morning after accidentally being shot in the leg.
Cochise County Sheriff's office spokeswoman Carol Capas said the incident happened around 7:30 a.m. off of Cascabel Road and Farnsworth Field, several miles northeast of Benson, Arizona.
The sheriff's office says the accident occurred as the grandfather had the boy hand him a rifle by sliding it under the fence once the grandfather was on the other side.
The boy was airlifted to University Medical Center in Tucson where he is undergoing treatment.
Capas said the boy's injuries are non life-threatening, however he has significant damage to his leg.
Benson is 45 miles east-southeast of Tucson.
