MARICOPA, AZ - Crews were able to rescue an elderly woman and her six small dogs after a fire broke out at her Maricopa home Wednesday afternoon.
Maricopa Fire Department spokesman Brad Pitassi said firefighters responded to the scene near Honeycutt and Murphy roads around 3 p.m.
When crews entered the home they reportedly discovered thick smoke from floor to ceiling in several rooms. During a search inside the house they located the female homeowner who was disoriented and confused, according to Pitassi.
The woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and is expected to be alright.
Pitassi said crews also rescued the woman's six small dogs from inside the home.
Investigators reportedly discovered that the fire started outside the home where a plumber was working on a water pipe.
Officials said a firefighter was transported to an area hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion.
