MARICOPA, AZ - Authorities say a man died in a fire Tuesday morning at a mobile home that’s attached to a church in Maricopa.
According to spokesman Elias Johnson with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, the fire started around 3:30 a.m. at the Divine Mercy Catholic Lay Missionary near Papago and Salmonson roads.
A witness on scene called 911 to report the fire and said the man was still inside, Johnson said.
Air15 video showed smoke coming from the church hours later around 8:30 a.m.
The victim has since been identified as Jose M. Nazareno, 79, whose wife was able to escape after he alerted her about the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
