MARICOPA, AZ - Bangkok, Thailand set the Guinness World Record for the most participants in a water gun fight in 2011, but the City of Maricopa shattered that record Saturday.

Maricopa is known for its special events like the 7th Annual Great American BBQ. Officials said people came out in droves for a chance to participate in breaking a world record.

“There are a few opportunities to get in the Guinness Book of World Records," said Will Dunn, the director of Action Alliance Network. "Families will remember this for a lifetime."

Only 3, 471 people attended the Bangkok water gun fight. That record was shattered Saturday with 3,804 people involved in the Maricopa event.

Dunn said the number has not been verified by the Guinness Book of World Records yet.

The event originally scheduled for Independence Day was moved to July 7 due to weather issues.
