CASA GRANDE, AZ - A 14-year-old boy who took a family car without permission was killed and two of his young relatives were injured in a rollover accident near Casa Grande.
“The 14-year-old had taken the vehicle from his grandmother without her permission. They were totally unaware they took the vehicle,” said Tim Gaffney, a spokesman with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.
Gaffney says 14-year-old Cesar Arias was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected when the vehicle rolled just before 6 p.m. Monday on Shires Road north of Arica Road, south of Casa Grande.
Arias' 9-year-old brother, Ezekial, and their 13-year-old cousin, Lilliana, were hospitalized with serious injuries.
Arias’ mother, Rachel Arias, told ABC15 the family is heartbroken. Her 9-year-old son was released from the hospital and is staying with friends in Phoenix while they deal with their loss.
“Parents need to talk with their kids about the dangers of driving, a young man, especially 14 years old, had no experience behind the wheel. This is obviously going to affect his family for a very long time,” Gaffney said.
Sheriff Paul Babeu said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when Arias lost control, causing the vehicle to roll several times.
