CASA GRANDE, AZ - Department of Public Safety officers cracked down on Interstate 10 looking for drug smugglers and illegal immigrants, conducting a sweep of the interstate between Tucson and Phoenix.

Officers told ABC15 that I-10 is a high traffic area for drugs.

"It's coming from Douglas and Nogales and heading straight to Phoenix, which is the hub. It's then distributed to the rest of the nation," said a DPS officer who asked to be unnamed.

Smugglers travel I-10, sometimes several times a week, carrying drugs and money to and from Mexico.

On the day of the bust, officers chased down and arrested one suspected drug smuggler.

After pulling the suspect over, they found 270 pounds worth of marijuana in the truck of the car.

The suspect took off running, but after a short chase troopers were able to catch him.

The suspect said he is a resident of Mexico and was headed to Phoenix.
