Yuhnke Commentary: New iPad impresses, but doesn't wow

PHOENIX - Unless you had your head in the sand this week, you know that Apple announced the new iPad. Speculation and rumors ran amok for weeks before the official announcement on Wednesday. When the dust fell, I can say I was impressed but not wowed.

The new iPad packs a few notable improvements from the iPad2, including a new retina display, a 5 megapixel camera and a better, faster processor. These are all improvements that everyone expected. We KNEW that Apple had to add these. They were pretty much givens. My biggest problem is that Apple didn’t do what Apple normally does and go one step beyond the expectations.

There was no “one more thing.” I know that was something Steve Jobs did but hasn’t that become an expectation of Apple? With all the fanfare and hype surrounding an Apple announcements I always want something extra. The frosting on the cake, the cherry on top. This time I felt like there was no cherry. Apple left us hanging.

This isn’t to say that the new iPad isn’t worth it. It’s a nice upgrade from the iPad 2, and I would argue well worth the $100 price difference between those two models. I just hoped for more. I hoped to be wowed. I hoped to be “Appled” I wasn’t.
