Geotagging your photos is easy and fun but you have to be careful

PHOENIX - Geotagging is a feature that many cell phones already have built-in.  By default, it's usually turned off for security reasons but once you turn it on, it attaches your latitude and longitude to every photo you take.

Some photo services will recognize that location information (it's embedded in the photo, you can't see it but it's there).  When you upload your photos to those or into that software, you'll have access to a map with all of your photos plotted on the map.

It's a fun way to view your photos but remember that uploading those pictures to social media services may also reveal your location to everyone.  I suggest turning the service off on your phone when you're not using it.

The last thing you want to do is reveal your location to the entire world when you're trying to keep your privacy intact.

Here are some of my favorite sites and tools for accessing photos that are geotagged:

Flickr
Google Picasa
Apple iPhoto
Smugmug

Consult your phone's user manual to find out how to activate geotagging.
