PHOENIX - The 100 Club is continuing efforts to bring awareness to mental health issues affecting first responders.

In February, the group invited Bob Douglas, the founder of the National Police Suicide Foundation , to speak to a group of law enforcement and fire personnel about the signs and symptoms of suicide and other mental health issues that might affect first responders.

Douglas’ presentation in Avondale is one of a handful the 100 Club has sponsored throughout the state in the past year. Several hundred representatives from several dozen agencies have received the training.

The classes come at a critical time, as the Phoenix Fire Department also continues to implement its own changes after four firefighters killed themselves during a span of seven months.

It’s an important issue, said Angela Harrolle, who organized the event.

“It really just affects me, and I keep thinking, ‘Why can’t we do more?’” she said.  “All we can do is keep bringing the training and offering it and hoping that they take the training that they’ve learned here back to their departments and share it with their colleagues.”

Harrolle said a special crisis line for police officers has also been created to allow them an outlet to seek mental health assistance.

The number, 602-433-COPS (2677) is a confidential number for police officers and their families to use.

A special crisis line for fire personne l, 602-845-FIRE (3473) was established during the summer.
