Getting a divorce can be a difficult, emotional decision for a lot of people.
It can also be expensive. Or is it?
The ABC15 Investigators went undercover to see if you could really get a divorce for the advertised price of $200.
Our producer, who is looking into a divorce, went to a business called Document Preparation Specialists LLC at 25th Street and Indian School Road in Phoenix.
The process begins when a worker fills out divorce paperwork.
According to the company's website, the cost for that is $199 if you don't have children. If kids are involved, the price is $299.
But that's just the cost for preparing the paperwork. So how much extra will you spend?
Aaron Nash with the Maricopa County court system says there's also a $321 filing fee for divorces, in addition to other procedural costs depending on what's needed.
The filing fee can be deferred or removed depending on financial need.
So, we kept looking into whether a $200 divorce is possible, and visited a different Valley business.
The sign outside the company even says $200 divorce.
Again, we're told if there are children involved, we have to add $100 to the cost.
The worker says that's because there is twice the paperwork involved.
So, can you get it for that price?
Sort of.
At both businesses we could get paperwork filled out for the price if we didn't have children involved, but there are added court costs for a divorce.
Before we visited the businesses, each did tell us there could be extra costs.
They also tell us they help people trying to get the filing fees waived.
Here are the rules about court filing fees and what's needed to get them deferred or waived.
