Family of fallen Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry calls for resignations

The family of a fallen Border Patrol Agent is encouraging the Attorney General to ask for resignations from several Department of Justice officials who were involved in the Fast and Furious gun case linked to Brian Terry’s death.

Tuesday, Terry’s family reacted to the investigative report released last week by the Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Justice, which found various people affected the failed strategy.

The Terry’s said Department of Justice personnel who failed to inform the Attorney General – in a timely manner – of a link between the Fast and Furious gun case and the two guns found at Brian Terry’s murder scene should be asked to resign.

“Those DOJ personnel…were derelict in their duties and exhibited horrible professional judgment,” they said.  “We call upon the Attorney General to immediately ask for the resignations of these officials."

The Terry’s statement also calls for the resignation of Lanny Breuer, the Assistant Attorney General, and it calls for an investigation into the former U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona, Dennis Burke.

The Terrys said Burke misled the family when he visited them in Michigan after Brian Terry’s death. 

He “specifically told the family that the weapons found at the murder scene were not related to Operation Fast and Furious,” they said in a statement. 

The Terrys said they would like Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate whether Burke conspired to keep that information secret to avoid taking responsibility for involvement in the case.

The Terry family is also asking for investigations into the Department of Homeland Security and the manner in which Secretary Janet Napolitano was briefed about the link between the Terry’s murder and the Fast and Furious case.

“If FBI officials failed to provide accurate and comprehensive information at that briefing, we believe they are derelict in their duties and should be admonished,” the Terry’s said.

“And we call upon DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to conduct a full internal investigation within DHS and ICE to determine why information pertaining to Operation Fast and Furious was not passed up the chain of command to her office. We further call upon Secretary Napolitano to hold those DHS/ICE officials accountable for their failures in protecting public safety."

Before the OIG report was released, Brian Terry's mother told ABC15 she just wants to heal.

"I just don't want this to happen to somebody else," Josephine Terry said. "I'd like to be brought to the end and who are responsible be held responsible and just don't let it happen to someone else's child."
