Do you love hard-boiled eggs, but hate taking the time to remove the shell?
The makers of the Eggspress shell-less egg cooker claim that it can cook those hard-boiled eggs in minutes without having a shell. Will it work? Let me try it before you buy it.
There are two methods to cook: microwave and boiling in a pot. We tried the microwave method first to see how fast we could cook them.
We sprayed the bottom section of the Eggspress with cooking spray and filled each cavity with large grade A eggs as recommended. Then, we punctured each egg yolk with a toothpick, so the egg wouldn’t explode in the microwave. We snapped in the top piece and screwed in the locking plug. Finally, we put it in the microwave for four minutes and 15 seconds per the instructions.
The result… the eggs were unevenly cooked and the yolk still slightly uncooked. It also left a mess on the ceiling of the microwave.
So we decided to try the boiling method to see if we get a better result. We used the same preparation method, except this time did not puncture the yolks. We placed it in a pot with just an inch of water over the Eggspress, brought it to a rapid boil, and let it sit for 25 minutes covered.
Removing the Eggspress cover revealed some very unappetizing oddly shaped eggs. Although the eggs were slightly better cooked, they still did not have that same texture if we were to have boiled them in a pan ourselves. It also left more cleanup and mess after the fact that just wasn’t worth the hassle.
So I have to give the Eggspress a thumb down.
My recommendation is if you want to make removing that shell easier, put it in a bowl of ice water and it should come off with less effort.
