PHOENIX - You have to have something to hand out on Halloween night, but don't get tricked into paying too much for those treats.
We took the advice of all you Smart Shoppers out there and checked prices at Wal-Mart, Target, Smart and Final, Costco, Sam's Club and the 99 Cent Only store.
We start with Smarties. We couldn't find them at Costco or Sam's Club. But at Target we found a 56-ounce bag for $6.99. We found a little smaller bag at Smart and Final -- a 48-ounce bag for $5.99.
Wal-Mart had a 16-ounce bag for $1.98. And we found an 8-ounce bag at the 99 Cent Only store. So when you break it down, Smarties cost 12 cents per ounce at all three locations.
All of the stores we checked had chocolate varieties -- including Butterfinger, Crunch, and Baby Ruth. Smart and Final had a variety bag for 19 cents per ounce. Target’s 38-ounce bag averaged 18 cents per ounce. Costco's price was 16 cents per ounce. But Sam's Club creeped away with the best price on this one, $9.98 for a 70-ounce bag. That's 14 cents an ounce for the same candy.
Next, we compared prices on a variety bag which had all sorts of candy, like Tootsie Rolls, Mini Dots and Tootsie Pops. It was a close race. But this time the 99 Cent Only store came in last place -- at 15 cents per ounce. Costco and Wal-Mart aren't far behind at 14 cents per ounce. Smart and Final and Target tied for second at 12 cents per ounce. And again, Sam's Club has the best value at only 10 cents per ounce.
So you might be wondering -- is it better to buy the biggest bag? To answer that question - we bring in Kit Kat!
Wal-Mart has two sizes of the Kit Kat snack-sized candies. The largest package costs $4.48 for a little more than 20 ounces. That averages to 22 cents per ounce. The next size down is 11 ounces at a cost of $2.48. Not much of a difference, the bigger bag will save you about a penny per ounce.
In the end, we learned just because the total price is under a buck doesn't make it a good deal. The 99 Cent Only store had awesome deals for Halloween decorations, but not the best prices for candy.
We found the best value at Sam's Club. But keep in mind, you do need a membership to shop at Sam's Club -- which will cost you at least $40 per year.
Costco had the fewest candy options.
And if it's variety you're seeking, Target and Wal-Mart will definitely give you sugar overload.
And remember the closer it gets to Halloween, the fewer choices you may have. So buy your candy sooner rather than later to find the best deals.
You can check the prices of all your favorite candies because we compared several more varieties and compiled a whole list for you.
