Moving into a new home is hectic enough, but the ABC15 Investigators are finding many Valley residents paying much more than they thought to get their belongings back from the people hired to help them.

Paul from Phoenix emailed us saying, "The quote [the movers] gave was $2,400. We gave them $1,200. Now the movers want $4,000."

Jennifer from Scottsdale told us a similar story, saying, "I was given an estimate of 2,900 pounds and $1,800. The company is now charging me for 5,000 pounds and $3,250."

Phoenix resident Ayanna has had an even harder time, saying "It's been six months and [the movers] have yet to deliver my household goods."

One of the big problems is that movers can get away with this practice in many cases.

The U.S. Department of Transportation regulates interstate moves, but they don't have many inspectors.

The Arizona Department of Weights and Measures does a good job if there's a weight issue, but they too don't have the staff to do it all.

The other problem is people not protecting themselves.

If you're planning a move, check the mover's reputation online, including checking the Better Business Bureau and Ripoffreport.com.

Also, the movers must see your belongings and give you a written estimate. Don't accept a verbal estimate by phone.

Make sure the contract is specific and includes all you will move, and try to pay as little up front as possible.

There are good movers out there, you just need to find them.

Email me with any scams you want investigated or tell me about them on my ABC 15 Facebook page .
