Whether it's $50 to a grocery store you don't go to or $25 for electronics you don't need, gift cards don't always hit the mark when it comes to presents.
But, since they're the most popular gift on everyone's list, you probably got one or two in your stocking this year. And, now that the holidays are over, what do you do with the ones you don't want?
You can try to return them to the store they're for, but don't count on getting cash in return.
Now, with 6 in 10 people telling the National Retail Federation that gift cards were at the top of their Christmas list this year, online gift card exchanges are becoming a marketplace of their own.
On websites like Plastic Jungle , GiftCardRescue.com , Cardpool and Gift Card Granny , you can sell your cards for cash -- you'll just lose some of the value along the way.
Plastic Jungle says they'll get you up to 92 percent of the original value of the gift card.
But cash isn't your only option. Plastic Jungle allows you to turn your gift card into a donation to you favorite charity and many sites allow you to buy discounted gift cards as well. Even gift card exchange parties (a form of white elephant party) have become popular recently.
And, if all else fails, you can always re-gift that unwanted gift card next year to someone else. Thanks to Congress, gift cards have to stay valid for at least five years after they're bought.
What have you done with you unwanted gift cards? Email me or go to my ABC15 Facebook page and tell me about it.
