If you’re planning on doing your own electrical repairs around the house, think again.

The staff at Angie’s List says that electricity can be one of the most dangerous home repairs and can turn fatal.

You’ll want to leave the repairs to the professionals but there are electrical warning signs you can check for.

Lights that flicker when major appliances are turned on could signal an electrical problem.

You should check to see if any of your outlets feel hot when being used.

Problems can also arise if your outlets are only two prongs. Homes built after 1970 should have three-prong outlets. The third prong is grounded.

If you find a potential problem, call a licensed electrician.

Many electricians are starting to offer service contracts where they come out and do an annual inspection of your home.

But there is one thing can homeowners can do themselves, and that’s to use a surge protector. It should keep your pricey electronics from getting fried from a power surge.
