Design trends in our homes mirror those in fashion, so what you see on the catwalk you will also see in your living room.

Jewell Blair, interior designer, and owner of Jay B's Interior Design , says 2011 trends will be similar to those of last year. 'Last year the colors were muted and grayed which gave a calm sense of style and sophistication. You see some of that this year also, but there are punches of deep color with strong vibrant hues.'

The muted shades of blue, gray, green and purple are sticking around, Blair says these colors can all be considered neutrals so you can mix and match them with your favorite colors. This look is clean, timeless and elegant.

Blair says yowill also see soft pastels but with a more earthy flavor. You can give these an added pop with color as well because the pastel colors will not overpower a room.

If you are ready for a big change, Blair suggests adding deep, but not necessarily bright colors. The 'Restless Nomad' color collection from Sherwin Williams' is good example of these colors.

Bolder colors are also making their way into home decor, they are vibrant but not bright, think Avatar.

You can also add small color additions to your current room as a pop of color, Blair says, 'it not only freshens your space, but brings new energy into the new year.'

If your braver, then paint one wall or introduce a new fabric. When choosing a new color to incorporate into your home, Blair advises you start with a color you like and build off of it.

To see what works best for you search magazines and websites to gain inspiration, then adapt them to your style and budget.

Blair used colors from the Sherwin Williams' Colormix 2011.

If you'd like to learn more about interior design, Blair is teaching an Introduction to Interior Design class at Glendale Community college. Classes begin Jan. 25. The 15 week course is $213 plus lab fees. If you prefer to have someone else do the work, you can hire Blair, she provides a free initial in-home consultation.
