It's always sad to drive around the Valley and find that mom and pop shop has gone out of business.

And you may wonder what you can do about it?

Believe it or not, you can make a difference in your community by skipping the chain restaurants, and choosing to shop local, according to according to Kimber Lanning, the founder of Local First AZ .

"For every $100 spent in a locally owned business, $45 remains in that community, while for the same $100 spent in a national chain, only $13 remains," says Lanning.

Lanning says there are 5 things that we can do to help make a difference in our local community:

1. When you're going out to eat, try a new local place and look for great recommendations on-line.

2. Educate yourself about what is local: companies like Bashas', Harkins', Community Tire, Harper's Nurseries, BedMart- they are all owned right here in Arizona.

3. Visit our directory to learn more about what is in your neighborhood.

4. Try something new: a local bank, a local pharmacy, a local hardware store… the possibilities are endless! And NO it doesn't cost more money!

5. Remember to support the businesses that give donations when you ask!
