Think you’re saving yourself calories by skipping breakfast? Think again.

Registered dietitan Michelle Dudash says the only way to kick start your metabolism is to begin the day with a hearty, healthy breakfast full of nutrient-rich foods.

Need more convincing? Check out Michelle's top five reasons why you NEED to be eating breakfast.

Avert Weight Gain

Studies have shown that consuming a nutrient-rich breakfast on a regular basis is associated with decreased risk of obesity. After the first meal, it’s wise to consume lunch and dinner cushioned by healthy snacks in between to keep your metabolic furnace burning.

Concentration & Focus

While sleeping, your body relies on the liver to send a steady stream of glucose to the blood to maintain normal levels. Breakfast refills these glycogen stores and provides the fuel your brain requires.

Fuel the Burn

In order to maximize calorie-burn during your workouts, be sure to fuel properly beforehand. By consuming a small carbohydrate-rich breakfast prior to your workout, you will give your body the essential fuel needed to push to your highest potential. Experiment with the foods that work well for you, such as a piece of toast, a banana, or glass of orange juice.

Prevent the Vending Machine Battle

If you filled your stomach with nutritious foods for breakfast, you’ll be less tempted to take a trip to the vending machine filled with junk or dip into the box of donuts in the break room. A mix of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats will help keep you energized while staying fuller longer, such as yogurt, peanut butter on toast, or a fruit and milk smoothie.

Essential Nutrients

Skipping breakfast lessens your opportunity to meet your daily needs of essential vitamins and minerals. With flu season quickly approaching, a robust immune system supported by healthy nutrients from food is a key to escaping the virus’s grasp. Not sure which foods are nutrient packed? Think color. A green smoothie for breakfast loaded with banana, frozen unsweetened berries, apple, carrot, and spinach provides a wide range of colors and beneficial plant compounds in one refreshing glass.
