It can be difficult to keep your workout on track in the summer especially when you live in the desert.
With our triple digit temperatures, doing just about anything outside is pretty much out of the question.
So what do you do?
According to Wendy Allen, personal trainer with Shape Up Training , you can use the one thing you most want to get into, the pool!
Water aerobics is a good option, but if you're used to running, biking, or using the elliptical, Allen says it will only burn about half the calories.
But it is possible to get in a good workout in the water.
Allen says the key is to perform explosive movements, using the water as resistance to increase your heart rate.
Some of her suggestions include jump squats, split jumps, lateral hops, jumping jacks and kicks.
Allen says to use the exercises to get your heart rate up and keep it there for at least 30 minutes, then jump out every 5 minutes and do push ups.
You can also use water dumbells to increase the resistance, and instead of counting repetitions Allen says you should do the exercises for 2 - 3 minutes or until the muscles get really tired.
As always make sure you drink plenty of water before, during and after your water workout. Just because you're in the water doesn't mean you aren't sweating and losing hydration.
Allen also suggests you wear water shoes, sunblock, a hat or visor and make sure you have an exercise mat close by.
You should always check with your physician before beginning any new exercise routine.
