Tigers have been an important species at Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium during its 28 year history. Bengal tigers were one of the first large predators to be displayed at Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium and our breeding program has been important in maintaining large numbers of the animals for both exhibit in zoological facilities and reintroduction programs in the wild.
Tigers are the largest of the cat species reaching around 10 feet in length and weighing in at more than 600 pounds! They are one of the most recognizable animals in the world with their orange fur and black striped pattern but can also be seen with white fur and black stripes and the rarer variety, the "snow white", which has white fur but almost no stripes. There are six subspecies of Tiger that range throughout Asia, with all six being considered endangered. Many face threats of poaching and habitat loss which has led to a significant decline in their numbers. The Bengal Tiger, which is considered the most prevalent subspecies, is estimated at around only 2,500 individuals.
Tigers, like those on display at Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium, have taken on an important role: they have become ambassadors for their wild counterparts and through them we can promote education and conservation for Tigers and their habitats as well as many other critical species and habitats around the world.
