Today is National Walk to School Day. It's an occasion being marked by nearly 50 schools across the state, to encourage physical activity in their students, promote sustainable methods of transportation, shed a light on pedestrian safety and build stronger communities.
Walk to School Day was started in 1997 and has been growing ever since. Last year alone, more than 4,000 American schools participated.
Dr. Floyd Shewmake, of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, understands the importance of walking, along with the health benefits it can bring.
Of course, there are a number of health benefits related to walking, which include managing weight, lowering blood pressure and improving cholesterol.
Because walking is low impact, it's a great way to get started on the road to fitness. It's also simple and free, which means that anyone can do it, and families can even do it together.
Not sure if your children's school participated in Walk to School Day today? You can learn more about related activities at www.walkbiketoschool.org and help your school get involved next year.
But don't put your health on hold - start walking now! A brisk walk after dinner can bring long-lasting wellness benefits and provide quality family time. Just make sure that everyone has proper footwear and stays safe during the excursion.
In 2006, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona introduced Walk On!, a walking and health challenge for kids. Over the past seven years, more than 210,000 Arizona fifth-graders have participated and learned the fundamentals of health and wellness. Parents can learn more about the program and how to get their kids involved at http://www.walkonaz.com.
