Sonoran Living co-host Susan Casper and Artemis Saxton, a veteran therapist over at United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arizona, discussed the innovative therapies and services offered at the Center.
Over the years, UCP of Central Arizona has expanded services to include individuals with other types of disabilities. Many in the community are unaware that UCP serves children and adults with various disability other than cerebral palsy including autism, down syndrome, developmental delays, and learning disabilities. This segment also highlights the wonderful Saunders family who adopted a young girl named Ruby Grace.
On a missionary trip to Africa, the family met miracle baby Ruby! She was found by the Saunders family, pushed to the back of a crib because no one knew what to do for her or how to help her. She was one year old and only an astounding 6 pounds. The family rescued her and adopted her. She has had 5 surgeries in 5 months to help with the 12 pockets of fluid build up in her brain, and wasn't expected to live. Ruby Grace will always have many challenges, but for today, she knows love, a full stomach and is continuing to grow and learn at UCP of Central AZ.
The therapists at UCP have done an incredible job working with her on sensory challenges, building strength and mobility. Ruby fed herself for the very first time just a few months ago. With the family support and UCP and skilled surgeons, she has a much brighter future.
