Wedding season in the Valley is nearly upon us. That means there are frantic couples looking for quick, easy tips for getting into shape. Myrna Jacobson, health promotion executive with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, has an extensive fitness background and shares her tips for trimming down for the big day.
It's not too complicated, but does require some planning and determination.
First, Jacobson recommends planning ahead. Too many brides and grooms wait until the last minute to begin an exercise routine. That often means they don't meet their goals in time for the big day.
Instead, consider incorporating healthy habits into your relationship before you're married. Start six to eight months before the wedding date and exercise together, join a gym or establish a regular jogging or walking routine. Find something that fits your lifestyle. Also encourage one another to eat healthy and manage stress levels, as these healthy habits will lead to an overall healthier marriage for years to come.
Also, identify a few easy exercises you can do anywhere, regardless of weather, gym access, and schedules. Wedding planning can become hectic, and exercise is often the first thing to be cut from busy schedules. Having a plan for fitness that is quick and easy will go a long way in toning and trimming. As an added benefit, exercise can help alleviate stress.
And lastly, don't underestimate the importance of cardiovascular exercise. To look really trim in that dress, incorporate medium or high impact cardio into your exercise routine at least four days per week. This will reduce fat overall, in addition to having positive psychological effects, including better memory.
In fact, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association offers a program that's open to the public called WalkingWorks. Participants can track their progress at http://www.walkingworks.com - it's a free and confidential program that's all about encouraging people to establish a regular walking routine.
