While the Lake Tahoe region seems created for skiers, let's not forget about those who would rather keep two feet safely in their own shoes. Many ski resorts have a wide variety of activities for non-skiers too.

Zephyr Cove offers snowmobile tours through the snowy Tahoe backcountry that can't be beat. Guided tours are offered, which cruise through mountain meadows up to peaks of nearly 9,000 views. Tours are available for all skill levels, but you must be at least 16 to drive a snowmobile.  

For a truly unique experience, try mushing (dog sledding) or a sleigh ride. Borges Carriage and Sleigh Rides offer old-fashioned sleigh rides in antique European sleighs through a meadow area.

Another option: rent snowshoes to explore the mountainside. Snowshoeing can be a great lower-cost family activity. Equipment can be rented at many of the area's ski shops, and many ski resorts offer areas for the activity, as does Spooner Lake.

Or, jump on a giant inner-tube or sled and slide on the snow just like you did when you were a kid. Heavenly Mountain Resort, which straddles the Nevada-California border and offers 4,800 acres of skiable terrain, has an ice rink in its village area, and a tubing hill at the top of its gondola.
