Why Cruise?
The popularity of cruising can't be denied. A record 15 million passengers cruised in 2010, and more than 11 million of these guests were American passengers, according to the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association.
From a weekend getaway to a trip around the globe, cruising affords travelers the opportunity to see the world and visit multiple cities and countries while only unpacking once. In addition, cruising offers great food, entertainment and children's programs.
Picking a Cruise
With so many options to choose from, picking a cruise can be a daunting task, especially for those cruising for the first time.
When selecting a cruise, AAA Travel recommends travelers ask themselves three questions:
1. Who is traveling?
2. Where do you want to go?
3. How much time do you have to spend?
It's important to note that each cruise line has a unique personality. Some specialize in relaxation or trendy nightlife, while others specialize in multigenerational activities.
Popular Itineraries
The Alaska cruise season runs May to September and offers great itineraries for first-time cruisers. Most Alaskan cruises run 7 days with the option to add additional time in the heartland of Denali.
European cruises are most popular in the summer, but are also available year-round. Most European cruises run 12 days, but shorter and longer options are available. These itineraries typically include the Mediterranean, Emerald Isles, Baltic and more.
A Caribbean cruise is another great first-time cruise, as it offers a sample of several islands over a 7-14 day period, along with a variety of departures and price ranges. Most itineraries include a visit to the cruise lines private islands for a day of relaxation with all food included.
Cruise Tips
AAA Travel has three key tips for first-time cruisers:
1. Understand what is included in cruise price and what additional charges you may incur (i.e. beverages, shore excursions, gratuities, etc.).
2. Don't start with a 2-3 day cruise. These short getaways generally take place on older ships and don't offer a true representation of what a 7-day cruise would be like.
3. Utilize the help of a travel professional, such as a AAA Travel agent, who will help you find a cruise that will fit your needs and budget.
