We Here at WoodCraft are really pleased with the participation and response to the contest. We're looking forward to the next winning entry.
Speaking of winning entries, we have this month's winning project right here.
This was a bare frame (see photo); an old coffee table, missing its top. We turned it into a game center, with storage for game pieces under the tops. We have chess/checkers, backgammon, cribbage, tic-tac- toe, Chinese checkers built into the reversible tops.
We used several veneers: curly maple, red oak, wenge, cherry and lace wood. We used wood dyes for the bright colors on some of the maple.
The original table was stripped with a non-toxic, green product Soy-Gel, re-stained and we built the storage inside. The orange and blue flocking is the same type of material used to line jewelry boxes.
We carry a wide variety of finishes that can be used for this type of project. Wood dyes were our finish of choice for this project because of the colors available and the ability to blend different types of wood to look the same. Two types of dye's were used one is a dye stain that comes premixed from Behelns and the other is Trans Tint which is mix with alcohol to achieve the color you desire. We also carry the wood dyes used on this table. Here are a couple of samples of maple and some of the dyes. One other advantage to using dyes is they are fast drying and have little or no VOC's.
The use of veneer allows you to use many types of wood that could be costly if you used full stock. Veneer is glued to a underlayment and can be finished like any other wood. The choice of glue is important there are different types of glue for different applications, a veneer glue or a contact cement would work in this case.
