Night Envy Neon Run aids local charity in the fight against childhood obesity
Childhood obesity is increasing at an alarming rate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that the percentage of obese children ages 6 to 11 has doubled, and the percentage of obese adolescents ages 12 to 19 has tripled in the last 30 years. Here in Arizona, more than 30 percent of youth ages 10 to 17 are overweight or obese.
The statistics are startling, but they only tell part of the story. Sadly, children often suffer the heartache of social and psychological problems associated with their obesity, and the long-term effects can be even more devastating. The American Society for Nutrition and the CDC both report that children who are obese are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular illness and certain cancers as adults.
As parents, we want our kids to live long, healthy and happy lives. But to help ensure their health in the future, we must act now.
That is why I created Shape Up US in 2009. Our nonprofit organization combats the growing epidemic of childhood obesity by providing educational tools that help children, their families, and the entire community develop lifestyle skills that prevent obesity.
Shape Up Us' free-to-the-public healthy lifestyle events help families, teachers and schools assess and address their personal and community wellness needs in a fun and engaging way. Thousands of participants take part in our events, enjoying exciting, non-stop activities that include fitness contests, hands-on kids cooking, healthy giveaways and much more.
Our next event is the Scottsdale SUPER EXPO at Westworld of Scottsdale, located at 16601 N. Pima Rd. in Scottsdale.
The event will kick off with the Night Envy Neon Run, scheduled at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1. This 5k race features five color zones full of black lights, loud music, neon paint cannons, and dozens of obstacles. Registration is $30 with promo code SHAPEUPUS, and proceeds benefit Shape Up US' ongoing efforts to end childhood obesity. For more information or to register, visit nightnv.com.
We hope you and your friends and family will join us for the Night Envy Neon Run, an opportunity for you to exercise together while having a blast. Such events are at the heart of Shape Up US' commitment to improving the fitness and wellbeing of children and their families.
Jyl Steinback - mother, teacher, cookbook author, and fitness instructor - is the president of Shape Up US. To learn more about Shape Up Us, the Scottsdale SUPER EXPO or the Night Envy Neon Run, visit www.shapeupus.org .
