PHOENIX - In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, Maricopa County animal shelters are offering Chihuahua adoptions for just $5.
The shelters are knee-deep in the ankle-high dogs and want to find new homes for them, according to a news release.
Officials say Chihuahuas are entering animal shelters in record numbers.
They say there are 957 animals housed at their facilities, with over 200 of those being adoptable and half of those are Chihuahuas or mixes.
So Maricopa County Animal Care & Control is celebrating "Chihuahuas de Mayo with a monthlong promotion of the "The Whole Enchihuahua" at all shelter locations.
From May 5 through May 31, all Chihuahuas, Chihuahua mixes, and other small breeds under 20 pounds and over 3 months of age are only $5 to adopt, plus a $17 license fee.
Want to save more lives? Then consider helping another Chihuahua by donating $5 when you are adopting, or if you are unable to adopt.
MCACC reminds pet owners to spay and neuter their pets to help lower the number of homeless animals in Maricopa County.
Also, families should consider all that goes into caring for a Chihuahua before adopting. Officials say they are known for living into their teens and more susceptible to certain health issues. Many Chihuahuas are outgoing and social, but some are not.
For adoption hours and locations, or more information on MCACC, visit their website or call 602-506-7387.
