PHOENIX - Due to the overloaded kennels, the Arizona Humane Society is waiving all fees this weekend for a large adoption event.

According to the organization, an average of 150 animals walk through its doors every day.

"As of August 25, we've had just over 31,000 animals come through the doors. Nearly 19,000 of those animals were cats and kittens alone," said Kimberly Searles, Arizona Humane Society’s communication manager.

To show just how many animals the non-profit organization has seen, a demonstration was held Thursday at Tempe Marketplace, as the group set up a line of stuffed animals nearly 1/2 mile long, representing just how many animals they are trying to help.

"While it's not new, the situation is extreme,” Searles said. "We have more animals coming into the shelter than we are adopting. We simply are running out of space."

To help alleviate the full shelters, the organization will waive all adoption fees this weekend. They ask you provide a monetary donation in lieu of the costs. The adoption special will run August 28-29 at all Arizona Humane Society locations.

A two pet per household limit will be in effect for this adoption special. All adopters must meet certain requirements and undergo an adoption screening to ensure a good fit for the pets.

"We desperately need our community to put their compassion in action and give these lovable pets a second chance at a good life," said Searles.

To save a life this weekend, you can visit the group's Sunnyslope Facility at 9226 North 13th Avenue in Phoenix or the Campus for Compassion location at 1521 West Dobbins Road, also in Phoenix, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
