PHOENIX - One Valley animal shelter hopes to increase the number of cat adoptions using online technology.
The Arizona Animal Welfare League & Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has partnered with a Colorado firm to set up iPet Companion which allows an online user to play with animals remotely by controlling robotic toys with the click of a mouse.
According to an AAWL news release, the system will allow people to view in real time and play with adoptable cats from their computers at home.
KONG has installed the iPet Companion in the AAWL & SPCA's new adoption center at 40th and Washington streets in Phoenix.
A camera captures the action and lets users watch the video live as the cats chase, jump pounce and grab at the toys.
The idea is to showcase adoptable cats and let people play with them for a limited amount of time per play session.
AAWL & SPCA is also celebrating Adopt a Shelter Cat Month by waiving adoption fees on all adult cats through June 30. The adoption fee for kittens has been reduced to $50.
All cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
