PHOENIX - Do you want to make your next dinner extra special? It's not just about the food, but about the presentation. In other words, atmosphere counts. So where do you begin? Start with decorating the table with pieces you already have. Tina Mellino of Zia Interior Designs says just ask yourself a few simple questions. "What is the mood you want to create? Is it a cold winter night or warm summer evening?" Use things that are seasonal and in or around your home. Also, think out of the box, imagine using some your favorite items in new ways. Mellino says your creativity will help guest feel welcome. "I think when your guest sit down at a beautifully well thought our table they feel special. You have taken time to create atmosphere and an ambiance and usually people notice and appreciate the effort. Think about when you have seen a special table, the first thing you say is WOW look at the table!" Along with a beautiful table, set the mood with music. "It really enhances and sets the mood for your meal and evening!"

Simple Tips to Creating Atmosphere at your next dinner:

  • Consider the season, the time of day and the meal you're serving.
  • Invest in a nice white table cloth, its good any time of year.
  • Create 'Edible' centerpieces with fresh fruit, bread, olives, desserts, candies, cookies, cakes. They are colorful, tactile and fun to eat at the beginning or end of the meal!
  • Always include foliage or organic elements: Flowers, greens, herbs, containers of outdoor annuals can be used on the table and later planted in the garden, if your eating outside bring the browns, tans, greens and gold in from nature with anything you want: woven place mats, textured tablecloths, sand, smooth stones, shells, feathers, butterflies, small birds nest with eggs (real or faux).
  • Don't forget the lighting: Candle lite from either big hurricane candle holders or even small votive candles add romance, peace and soft light to your meal.
